Mars 2020 Rover Now Has Rotating Array of Drill Bits for Sampling

The Mars 2020 is in its final year of engineering before it will be deployed to the red planet in July next year. With its power source, wheels, and robotic arm ready to go, the next phase of construction was to install the bit carousel. The bit carousel is an important mechanism for the gathering and sorting of samples from the Martian surface. It looks “somewhat like an extraterrestrial version of a 1960s slide projector,” according to NASA, and it houses nine drill bits for digging into the surface rocks on Mars and collecting samples to send home to Earth. Nine drill bits are required as two are used for abrading (scraping away at the rock), one for regolith (the name for the loose soil and small rocks on the surface), and six for extracting core samples from rocks. Once the abrader bit has been used to scrape the top layer of rock away, the regolith and core bits are used to collect a sample and place it into a clean test tube. “The bit carousel is at the heart of the sampling and caching subsystem,” Keith Rosette, Mars 2020 sample handling delivery manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, explained in a statement. “It contains all of the tools the coring drill uses to ...

You probably know about 3-axis CNC milling. You might even be familiar with 5 axes. But

You probably know about 3-axis CNC milling. You might even be familiar with 5 axes. But did you know there’s also 6-axis CNC milling? Find out about this manufacturing marvel! The CNC milling machines most will be familiar with only operate on 3 axes: X, Y, and Z. This configuration is simple — just imagine a 3D printer and, instead of an extruder, it has a cutting tool that spins really really fast! Things get even more interesting with 5-axis CNC milling machines, which additionally execute rotations about the X- and Y-axes. The benefit is the ability to keep the cutting tool perpendicular to the material surface on multiple planes. This way, you can mill forms with overhangs that would be impossible to cut with a 3-axis machine (without a pause in milling to reorient the material, that is). And then there’s 6-axis CNC mills. The addition of another rotation axis, usually about the Z-axis this time, can cause a significant improvement in speed compared to 5-axis configurations. And that’s exactly the technological marvel we explore in this article.  The primary benefit 6-axis CNC milling offers over the closely-related 5-axis configuration is faster cutting times. With ...

A Review Of Apple’s New AirPods Pro: Better Sound And Fit — But Worse Battery Life BuzzFeed News Home Menu Icon Twitter Facebook Copy BuzzFeed News Logo Close Twitter Facebook Copy Facebook Twitter Instagram BuzzFeed News Home BuzzFeed Close Twitter Facebook Copy

I covered the new AirPods Pro with my ear filth for the last 24 hours. Here’s how Apple’s new buds sound and feel — and whether they’re worth the cost. Earlier this week, Apple made a surprise announcement: The AirPods Pro, featuring active noise cancellation, enhanced sound quality, and grippy silicone tips designed for a more comfortable fit, would be an upgraded version of the company’s wireless earbuds. For the last 24 hours, I’ve been testing the new buds, which hit stores today. My first impression? The AirPods Pro deliver impressive sound for their size and fine (but not stellar) noise cancellation for their price. There’s a lot to complain about when it comes to the original version of Apple’s AirPods. The battery (five hours per bud) doesn’t last a day on a single charge. They don’t offer noise cancellation. The hard plastic, one-size-fits-all design isn’t great for fit, comfort, or sound. They’re susceptible to being lost, dropped, and swallowed. And yet, AirPods are the best-selling headphones in the world. In the world! For many, the AirPods’ strengths outweigh their many flaws. The ear sticks are unmatched in how easily they pair with Apple devices, their portabilit...

Motorcycle Gear Company Helite Introduces Electronic Airbag Management

Helite has been making backpack style airbag vests and backpacks for a little while now Traditionally, the French motorcycle gear manufacturer has managed the deployment of its airbags with a tether cable. The airbag was triggered when the cable detached from the bike and the vest would inflate in the milliseconds it takes to go from falling off the bike to hitting the ground. For the past year or so though, Helite has been working on wireless sensor management for its airbags, and now, it’s bringing that tech to market. The interesting part about Helite’s solution is that It uses two sensors, one in the airbag vest itself and the other mounted on the bike’s fork. The fork sensor claims a 32ms response time while the sensors in the vest reacts in 62ms. The fork sensor should help in lower-speed crashes and in stationary crashes where the bike is stopped and then hit by a passing vehicle. For example, being rear-ended at a stop light. It has a five-year battery life and doesn’t require any sort of connection to data or GPS servers. Final development is still in process, and we hope the company has worked to eliminate false positives. The fork sensor might be prone to jarring from...

Bole opens US headquarters in Stow, Ohio logo-pn-color logo-pn-color

Düsseldorf, Germany — The Chinese manufacturer of Bole injection molding machinery has opened a U.S. headquarters in Stow, Ohio, near Akron, and hired Alfred Rak as president and CEO. Rak said Bole Machinery Inc. began operations about a year ago in a 25,000-square-foot building. The facility has about 30 Bole injection molding presses in stock. “The concept is we have enough machines on stock for immediate supply, immediate demands, No. 1. No. 2, we have the availability of parts needed, service and sales,” Rak said in an interview at the K show at the booth of Ningbo Shuangma Machinery Industry Co. Ltd., which makes Bole-brand presses. The company hired Rak, who has a long machinery work history in Europe and the United States, in June. Rak said a team from China had already located the U.S. headquarters in Stow. It’s a good location in Ohio, a center of the plastics industry, and near the important U.S. automotive sector, he said. Bole Machinery has five employees, including two salespeople and two service technicians, but the firm is recruiting more people in those positions, Rak said. The operation has eight exclusive sales agents, all of them east of the ...

Tucked up against the North Bridger Mountains north of Bozeman in the Shields Valley, the North

Tucked up against the North Bridger Mountains north of Bozeman in the Shields Valley, the North Bridger Bison Ranch provides legitimately local, grassfed, grass-finished, humanely field-harvested bison meat. Started by Matt and Sarah Skoglund and their two young children in 2018, North Bridger Bison is a truly game-changing arrival for local and sustainable food. Their bison live outside, year-round, grazing a diverse array of grasses and forbs on the ranch. And when it comes time for harvesting an animal for meat, the Skoglunds don’t ship their animals to a far-away slaughterhouse. Instead, they field-harvest their bison on the ranch in the pasture the bison are currently grazing. No stress for the animal, no stress in the meat. The result? Bison meat that is truly as delicious, tender, and healthy as you’ll ever taste. It’s simply on another level. Buy local, eat local, do your body and your taste buds a favor and reserve your quarter of North Bridger Bison meat today. North Bridger Bison currently sells “bison quarters” direct to customers, and they offer two different cut options: the Montana Cut and the Big Sky Cut. Both cut options include your classic ribeyes, t-bones, p...

David Hargreaves frets about the rising indebtedness of households

News that the indebtedness of New Zealand households has reached new highs provides food for thought and prompts a certain amount of head scratching. There’s a kind of interesting sub-story here. ANZ economists in a recent newsletter drew attention to the new figures, and said they were “not sure we like the end game”. They were commenting on the basis of Reserve Bank household figures that showed the household debt to income ratio hitting a new high of 167%. These comments from the ANZ economists seemingly attracted the attention of the RBNZ itself, whose figures were the centre of attention. Curiously, in having another look at their own figures, the RBNZ have now discovered an error “that occurred when incorporating the annual disposable income benchmarks to the quarterly household income series. We inadvertently did not apply the correct annual benchmarks, which are sourced from Statistics NZ”. The new figures (which can be seen in the first graph below and a comparison with the earlier incorrect figures) show that the debt to income ratio was in fact 162% in December – but the sharply upward trend portrayed in the earlier version of the f...

The Roll Forming Machine and the Roll Forming Process Register ico-categories ico-open ico-close ico-supplier ico-white-paper-case-study ico-product ico-cad

A roll forming machine (or metal forming machine) fabricates specific configurations out of long strips of metal, most commonly coiled steel. In most applications, the required cross-section profile of the piece is specifically designed for the machine to bend the metal as necessary. Other than roll forming, these machines perform a number of metalworking duties, including material cutting and roll punching. Roll forming machines, for the most part, work in a continuous cycle. The material is fed into the machine where it continuously makes its way through the stages of each operation, ending with the completion of a final product. A roll forming machine bends metal at room temperature using a number of stations where fixed rollers both guide the metal and make the necessary bends. As the strip of metal travels through the roll forming machine, each set of rollers bend the metal a little more than the previous station of rollers. This progressive method of bending metal ensures that the correct cross-sectional configuration is achieved, while maintaining the cross-sectional area of the work piece. Typically operating at speeds between 30 to 600 feet per minute, roll forming mac...
