James W Yule buys a new Mercedes-Benz Arocs from BLS Truck & Van

Aberdeenshire owner-driver James W Yule has taken delivery of his second Mercedes-Benz Arocs from BLS Truck & Van. The timber haulier acquired the 6×2 2553 tractor unit to replace his first Arocs, which went into service in 2014.  Primarily working out of the Fetteresso Forest, the operator needs a truck that is tough enough to handle heavy loads in rigorous environments, off surfaced roads. Over the past five years, the Arocs has proven its worth, prompting Yule to purchase a second.  “The Arocs handles the trails without any problem,” Yule said. “Its high ground clearance means deep ruts and bumps are never a problem, and lifting the rear-axle enables me to gain more traction from the drive-axle should I need it, while improving manoeuvrability for tight turns.  “The truck is also significantly lighter than a 6×4 tractor, and the resulting increase in payload capacity makes for higher productivity. I’ve considered other options but the Arocs is the only vehicle on the market that’s purpose-built for tough, off-road applications like mine.” Yule opted for the 12.8-litre OM471LA engine (530hp/2,600Nm) mated with the PowerShift3 automated transmission. The truck is...

Climate change debate sees Tony Abbott struggle to match rival’s policies.

Liberal MP Tony Abbott lashed out at the “social and economic costs” of climate action as he struggled to get ahead in a live Sky News candidate forum yesterday. The forum turned out to be a climate change debate in everything but name. The pro-coal former Prime Minister locked horns with rival candidate Zali Steggall, who is standing as an Independent in Abbott’s once safe Liberal seat of Warringah in NSW. Steggall said the Coalition has failed to deliver meaningful policy on climate action, renewable energy and electric vehicles (EV). In response, Abbott claimed people have a right to choose coal-fired power and fossil-fuel powered cars. Steggall also told the Sky News audience Australia is not on track to meet its Paris Agreement obligation. Former PM Tony Abbott is fending off Independent candidate Zali Steggall’s attempts to win his seat of Warringah. Wind and solar power are the cheapest form of baseload power now available, she said. Yet the Coalition has overlooked renewables like solar panels. It has also failed to plan for an “orderly retirement” of ageing coal-fired power stations. Steggall said a credible independent authority like the Reserve Bank could “take the p...

Vesconite Bearings improves marine bearing availability

Vesconite Bearings’ grease-free polymer bearings and wear parts for the marine industry will be even more widely available from August 2019. This follows the introduction of additional warehousing in Dubai, which adds to Vesconite Bearings’ global warehousing and stocking-distribution capacity located in the US, UK, Netherlands, New Zealand, Argentina, Australia, Singapore and South Africa. Dubai, as the busiest trading port in the Arabian Gulf, requires convenient marine bearing and wear-material stock to cater for the large liner companies that are increasingly using Dubai as a global trade-route and feeder vessel trans-shipment centre. The intention is to include a range of sizes able to accommodate most typical propeller shaft and rudder diameters. Useful plate and rod dimensions will also be included to accommodate various other marine applications, where long wear life, low friction and no greasing are desired. “Additional warehouses and stocking distributors mean that our bearings reach our customers faster,” says Marine Technical Representative Sharon Mc Ardle. “Our quick dispatch times will ensure that we become a supplier of choice for many companies, which can incur s...

Like many of us, [Tony] was entranced by the idea of casting metal, and set about

Like many of us, [Tony] was entranced by the idea of casting metal, and set about building the tools he’d need to melt aluminum for lost-PLA casting. Little did he know that he was about to exceed the limits of his system and melt a hole in his patio. [Tony]’s tale of woe begins innocently enough, and where it usually begins for wannabe metal casters: with [The King of Random]’s homemade foundry-in-a-bucket. It’s just a steel pail with a homebrew refractory lining poured in place, with a hole near the bottom to act as a nozzle for forced air, or tuyère. [Tony]’s build followed the plans pretty faithfully, but lacking the spent fire extinguisher [The King] used for a crucible in the original build, he improvised and used the bottom of an old propane cylinder. A test firing with barbecue charcoal sort of worked, but it was clear that more heat was needed. So [Tony] got hold of some fine Welsh anthracite coal, which is where the fun began. With the extra heat, the foundry became a mini-blast furnace that melted the thin steel crucible, dumping the molten aluminum into the raging coal fire. The video below shows the near catastrophe, and we hope that once [Tony] changed his pants, h...

Over the last decade, stand-up paddle-boarding has exploded in popularity. What began as an oceanic pursuit for a handful of surfers that included Laird Hamilton, Oahu’s aquatic stuntman Brian Keaulana, and a few old-school surf instructors from Waikiki, has today become globally ubiquitous from beach breaks to harbors to lakes and hidden angling spots. Today’s market has evolved into a dizzying array of boards for fishing, racing, river running, flat water, and yes, surfing. Constructions run the gamut, too, from exotic epoxies, carbon, and fiberglass to incredibly durable foam and inflatable models. For a beginner especially, the choices can be overwhelming, and that’s’ where this guide comes in. Because of these different genres and construction types, we decided to break paddle boards down into four categories: inflatable, soft, hard (surfing), and fishing — taking the beginner and first-time buyer into account. The picks that follow are the result of hours of time spent on screen and o...

10 Best Professional LED Grow Lights: Your Buyer’s Guide (2018)

Professional cannabis growers need the highest quality equipment in their grow rooms. Everything from ventilation to nutrients to lighting needs to be top of the line in order to produce massive, high quality buds. The best professional LED grow lights give you big yields and high quality buds. Whether you sell to a dispensary or keep your weed for personal use, you will not get great results with sub-par equipment. In this article we are going to go over the top 10 best LED grow lights for pro growers. LED lights are definitely the way to go in a professional grow operation. LEDs are superior to traditional HID or HPS because they offer a wide band spectrum without wasting energy in the form of heat. This means less risk of burning your plants, less ventilation needed, and less chance of nutrient burn, which happens when overheated plants become too thirst and suck up way too much nutrient solution. You will spend less money on the lights themselves as well, because although LEDs cost more upfront, they do not require nearly as much maintenance as HPS, which need to have their bulbs replaced once per year or more. In this article we are going to focus on lights that are 600W a...

Are you thinking about becoming an event photographer? This article will begin by giving you some

Are you thinking about becoming an event photographer? This article will begin by giving you some insight into what the job entails and the beginning steps for getting started. By its end, you should have a fundamental roadmap for getting started.Editor’s note: Mik Milman is a professional event photographer based in Los Angeles. This article was also published on Milman’s website. Event photography can be a wide category of professional photography. We often think of wedding and mitzvah photographers as their own genre of photography, so typically when referring to event photography we are talking about everything else such as birthday parties, corporate events, conferences, red carpets, award ceremonies, marketing events, etc. Event photography is well suited for a variety of personality types. Often a photographer’s personality type is reflected in their work. Both the fly on the wall as well as the gregarious type can excel at event photography. But truthfully it is someone that can combine both being an unobtrusive fly on the wall and willing to work a crowd that excels. Getting started can be tough. It is your classic situation in which you need a portfolio to get work, bu...

Why are e-cigarettes so problematic? A look into San Francisco’s decision to ban its sales

San Francisco has voted to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes, nicotine devices that have become extremely popular among teenagers. The move comes as a surprise as the city is home to Juul, the world’s largest manufacturer of the e-cigs. However growing fears of addiction among youth and the lack of research on the impact on our health has led to authorities taking a better-safe-than-sorry stance on the cigarette alternative. Once hailed as a healthy alternative to actual smoking, the use of e-cigarettes has been frowned upon. But how did our hopes to beat smoking fall so far from grace? E-cigarettes, or vapes, are little portable devices that heat liquid into aerosols for people to inhale. These liquids are loaded in cartridges that can be purchased from various suppliers. They also come in various flavours and packaged in all sorts of appealing designs. One truth is that e-cigarettes are less harmful than cigarettes themselves. Vapes heat nicotine that is extracted from tobacco that combine with other chemicals in water vapour that you inhale. Regular tobacco cigarettes have over 7,000 toxic chemicals that expose smokers to far more toxic content than traditional cigarettes...

Because air cylinders produce fast, repeatable motion, achieve high cycling rates, and don’t generate substantial heat, they are well suited to factory automation systems. However, air is compressible—which is an advantage in many applications, but complicates closed-loop motion control. A solution often overlooked is to incorporate a closed hydraulic circuit to regulate speed and provide load holding for the otherwise all-pneumatic system. Air-over-oil systems offer a cost-effective alternative for many closed-loop speed control applications by combining the convenience of readily available compressed air for power with hydraulics to control motion. These unconventional systems are well suited to low-power systems where smooth speed control, rigidity, or synchronized motion are needed. Most components needed for air/oil systems are standard hydraulic and pneumatic products—but no hydraulic pump is needed. When greater force is needed, a pneumat...
