Water damage from bad construction destroys homes and dreams

The U.S. housing market was only just starting to soar in 2001 when Mitch and Cheryl Goldstein plunked down $25,000 for an empty Bucks County lot. The couple, entering their early 40s, had long been saving for their dream home — a brand-new, ground-up Toll Brothers house. Known even then as “America’s Luxury Home Builder,” the locally based national company brimming with industry awards offered the kind of quality the Goldsteins coveted. So the Goldsteins eagerly planned: They chose skylights, upgraded to coffered ceilings, and envisioned a nursery for the little girl they hoped to adopt. Finally, they thought, in Toll’s new Buckingham Forest development, they would have the house they had worked so hard for. Even Robert Toll assured them of that. “We take the responsibility of building your new luxury house very seriously,” the company’s cofounder wrote in a letter to new homeowners, including to the Goldsteins after they signed their agreement of sale. “Welcome to the Toll Brothers’ family.” For years, it seemed, good fortune followed. The day they moved in, the adoption agency called with a match. Three years later, Toll was selling versions of their $446,000 home for nearly ...

Paterson company makes pita bread sold around the world

Kontos Foods has three Paterson factories and is adding a fourth building, thanks to its growing market here and around the world. This conversation is moderated according to USA TODAY’s community rules. Please read the rules before joining the discussion. Steve Kontos, president of Kontos Foods, takes us through the process of making a pita step-by-step in his Paterson factory. Kontos Foods was born in Paterson 31 years ago when the founders saw there was demand around the United States for the kind of Greek pita — a pocket-less flatbread — that could be found only in small quantities from mom-and-pop bakeries in Astoria, New York. Now the company is seeing the same demand from around the world, and is shipping its breads to a doz...

Daly Plastics recovers agricultural and packaging film

Daly Plastics, Caroda Polymer Recovery’s subsidiary, operates four granulation lines in Zutphen, making it one of the largest plastics scrap processing companies in the Netherlands. Daly Plastics aims to produce regranulates from recycled agricultural and packaging films of the same quality as virgin material. The company relies on Lindner Recyclingtech, headquartered in Austria, for innovative recycling solutions. Recognizing the potential of the recovered film market early on, Peter Daalder founded Daly Plastics in 1985 at age 16, with a focus on plastic scrap collection and processing. In 2013, the business expanded to plastics recycling with the recovery facility for agricultural and packaging films. Agricultural film is collected from more than 2,500 farmers in the Benelux countries and northern Germany. Approximately 64,000 metric tons of used film is recycled and processed into reusable polyethylene per year at the site. Daly Plastics uses Lindner’s Jupiter 2200 and Micromat 2000 shredders to produce ideal sized pellets. Material is weighed, presorted using grapples and fed onto a conveyor belt for processing. SAN FRANCISCO — This week, Mortenson Construction and Built Robotics announced that the contractor’s renewable projects will get

SAN FRANCISCO — This week, Mortenson Construction and Built Robotics announced that the contractor’s renewable projects will get a boost from the latter’s driverless excavators and other heavy equipment, making it one of the first major construction firms to adopt robotics on a nationwide scale. The artificial intelligence system from Built Robotics will be used mainly for digging 100-foot-diameter wells needed for wind turbine projects, according to Guarav Kikani, vice president of strategy and operations at Built Robotics. The system, which launched a year and a half ago, automates equipment like bulldozers and skid steers for faster and safer site work. It has been used by other firms for residential excavation projects and for trenching on oil and gas jobs, Kikani told an audience at the ENR FutureTech conference earlier this week. The firm also recently announced a partnership with Sunstate Equipment Co. to bring its system to the equipment rental market. Built Robotic’s software generates a machine’s tasks, such as where dirt should be moved, and contains the vehicle within a geofence so that it doesn’t veer off the grid. A combination of camera and LiDAR sens...

It’s set to open on Friday, July 6. Pressure Drop established its Hackney Brewery in 2012, before expanding to a new site in Tottenham, North London on the same estate as Beavertown in 2017. Verdant began brewing in 2014, establishing their production facility in Falmouth, Cornwall in 2016. They are currently the number one rated UK brewery on beer app Untappd. WHY IT MATTERSLondon’s craft beer scene is set to experience its next exponential stage of growth over the next few months, as breweries from both within the city itself and from further afield look to tap into the retail channel there. Life as a committed vegan can sometimes feel like an endless maze of complicated ingredients lists

Life as a committed vegan can sometimes feel like an endless maze of complicated ingredients lists compiled by companies that all seem to have something to hide.  Despite this, there are more vegans than ever before – 540,000 in the UK, up from 150,000 in 2006, according to the Vegan Society – and brands are scrambling to meet consumers’ increasingly eco-friendly demands. Nevertheless, there remain some key ingredients to look out for. Perfume lovers must not only avoid fragrances made with extracts of milk, honey, leather and beeswax, but also secretions from animals used to mark their territories, which are often used as fixatives to make a scent last longer. Civet comes from the anal glands of the endangered wildcat found in India and Africa. The civets are captured and held in cramped cages for years, with the musk being “scraped” out every 10 days. Brutal and icky as this sounds, civet musk is still present in many of the world’s favourite perfumes. The problem is, you wouldn’t know it, because companies are not legally obliged to disclose the ingredients used in their scents. They count as “trade secret formulas” and are exempt. Instead, you’ll simply see “fragrance”, “pe...
